When the World Health Organization speaks, people around the world listen. So, when WHO embarked on a multi-year study of water filtration products, we were honored to participate. The stated aim of the testing scheme was to ensure “that products used to treat water in homes are effective in protecting health,” according to and article on the WHO website announcing the study. Additionally, the testing served to alert governments and aid organizations of water filters and purification systems that did not meet the minimum requirements of the World Health Organization.
Uzima Gets Results
The results were released in a report entitled Results of Round II of the WHO International Scheme to Evaluate Household Water Treatment Technologies, which was made publicly available late in 2019.
WHO emphasizes the need for household water treatment (HWT) regardless of the water source, due to contamination and recontamination issues prevalent in much of the world. “This necessitates ensuring that water safety risks are minimized from catchment to consumer,” says the report, “including in households where unsafe collection, storage and handling can result in contamination.”
The tests looked at filtration efficacy against bacteria, protozoa, and where indicated, viruses. Uzima’s UZ-1 filter (the filter utilized in our UZ-1 Filter Kits, UZ-2 Complete Filtration Systems, and UZ-BP Backpack Filtration Systems) was tested for filtration of bacteria and protozoa, and was found to exceed WHO’s highest standards for removal of both types of organism.
“Receiving the World Health Organization ‘Targeted Protection’ Star Classification validates what we see every day,” said Uzima President, Bill Coble. “Waterborne diseases are drastically reduced, families are healthier, and lives are forever changed through the gift of clean water.”
